(Application Deadline is June 30, 2012)

PAPPTP, a program for the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, was inaugurated September 2007.  It is an innovative, intensive continuing education program designed to expand therapists' knowledge and skills in psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy.  Therapists who learn these skills find that they can work more effectively, deeply, and intensively with their patients.  This enables them to engage long-standing problems that are difficult to change in a lasting way in short-term treatment.  In addition, these skills help professionals strengthen the therapeutic alliance and overcome resistances in a wide range of therapies employing other treatment modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral and psychopharmacologic.

The core of the Program is two years of course work and individual supervision of cases in treatment.  Seminar leaders and supervisors are experienced psychodynamic psychotherapists, including analysts from SFCP (San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis) and PINC (the Psychoanalytic Institute of Norhern California).

Courses include a variety of orientations on theory and technique, along with exposure to concepts in human development from infancy on.  Courses are enriched by case material from the faculty's own clinical work.

Psychotherapy supervision is a valuable part of PAPPTP training.  Two cases are required for graduation, one for a minimum of 12 months, another for a minimum of 18 months.  PAPPTP provides guidance in selecting supervisors from a list of qualified analytic therapists.  Where there is financial need, there are supervisors who will offer significantly reduced fees.

Seven students from the first PAPPTP class (2007 - 2009) graduated and were awarded certificates in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at ceremonie at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis in 2009 and 2010.  Most graduates arecontinuing their psychoanalytic education in study groups or as candidates in psychoanalysis.  They stay in touch with one another and have joined the local community of psychoanalytic/psychodynamic therapists.

Our second group of students has just finished two years of classes.  They are enthusiastic about the program and their development as psychoanalytic psychotherapists.  Our faculty of over 30 local analysts and therapists has received praise from the students for their high level of teaching.  (If you are interested in talking with a present student or want more information, call Cheryl Goodrich 650-321-0533 or Richard Almond at 650-321-6637.)

Application Process: The Program is open to licensed graduates of mental health programs in psychiatry, psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work, and other related disciplines.  A written application describing prior training and work history is required along with letters of recommendation.  Applicants will be interviewed by two faculty members as part of the admissions process.  if you have any questions about any aspect of the program or want to explore your interest in applying, please do not hesitate to call Cheryl Goodrich (650-321-0533) or Richard Almond (650-321-6637).
