The Election Process for President and Board Chair

Comments by several members recently indicate unfamiliarity with the procedures for election of our key leaders. This is to clarify these procedures.

The Chair of the Board is elected by the Board. This is standard for Boards of Trustees. Prior to this election, the Nominating Committee receives suggestions for nominations from members of the Board. The committee reviews and discusses the qualifications of those suggested and decides on a slate of candidates. This slate is then presented to the Board, which votes on nominees from the slate.

The President is elected by the membership. Setting up this election, the Nominating Committee first publishes notices in the Newsletter soliciting suggestions for nominees. It may also invite individual members to be nominated. The qualifications of the potential nominees from these sources are then reviewed by the Nominating Committee, which then composes a slate which is presented to the membership for their vote.

If you have any questions or comments about these procedures, please do not hesitate to contact me.

"I heard it through the grapevine"

Recently, I heard at a cocktail party that no one attended the Scientific Meetings any longer. As a result, I decided to find out more about attendance at the Scientific Meetings in our new home.

Aaron Chow was able to provide me with some data, based on who signed the attendance sheets and how many computers logged in from home. One caveat about the data: they are low. It does not represent the people who attended but who did not sign in and similarly does not account for multiple viewers at one computer location. However, here is the data as best it can be quantified:

Board Chair's End of Term: SFCP Regional Meetings Spring 2013: Important Themes and Action Plans

Robin Deutsch, Jeff Miller and I (SFCP President, COO and Board Chair) led regional meetings for voting members in March and April of 2013. Members in Marin and Palo Alto graciously hosted the meetings and the San Francisco/Sacramento meeting was held at the Center. The SFCP Trustees requested the meetings in order learn what was on members’ minds regarding the Center and to get their input on questions about governance and the Center’s definition of mission. Members who attended the meetings raised questions about the Center’s financial stability, safety South of Market, and their professional identity in the context of expanding membership categories.

President's Message

It’s hard to believe, but the end of the academic year is here again. The last few months of the academic year seem to come and go in quite a flurry. In an instant, we have completed our administrative and academic tasks and feel ready to ease into summer. By the time this newsletter arrives in your hands, we will have welcomed the newest members to our graduate analyst community. This year, we celebrate the graduation of Claudette Heisler and Michael Smith, both from adult analytic training, and Marsha Silverstein from child analytic training. David Frankel, who died too soon, posthumously graduated from adult analytic training. However, this ceremony is not our only graduation celebration. On June 15, 11 trainees will be honored as the newest graduates of our Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy programs (PAPPTP and SFPPTP). SFCP celebrates the graduation of PAPPTP trainees Anat Barkai and Kent Campbell and SFPPTP trainees Kim Belfor, Mark Choa, April Crofut, David Fakhri, Dennett Hansmann, Beth Miller, Susan Moore, Christina Papanestor, and Priya Sonik.
