A Message from the Faculty Committee

by Michael Donner, Ph.D.

The Faculty Committee would like to thank SFCP President Robin Deutsch for the opportunity to present this message in the President's Column. The transition from an Institute and Society to a Center has been a time of considerable change for SFCP and the Faculty is no exception. For most of our history, the Education Committee (EC) was the intellectual and educational center of the Institute and Society, and what would eventually become our Center. As the EC even-tually wound up having broad managerial functions, the Faculty Council was created. According to Maury Marcus, who had proposed the idea to the EC, the goal was for the Faculty Council to serve "as a resource reservoir for all divisions–a reservoir of teachers, ideas, intellectu-al leadership, and consultation. Free from burdensome, major management responsibilities, it would have meetings and seminars, study groups, etc., to promote and enhance the work of teaching."

President's Message

This month I want to begin to address one of our current challenges: developing and mentoring our future leaders. We have no standing procedures for leadership or committee development and so we currently rely on habit or history to guide us. As a result, it can sometimes feel confusing to find one's way into our community's organizational life. Unfortunately, history and habit are not serving us well at this juncture in our development. When the process and procedures for leadership development is unclear, group process can become disrupted.

Every seven years, SFCP has a site visit from APsaA's Committee on Institutes (COI), which reviews our Center and our educational programs. This was our first site visit since becoming a Center. This year, for the first time, we had a simultaneous site visit from ACPE, Inc. Between the two teams, 9 visiting analysts attended classes, meetings, supervisions, and met with faculty, graduates, and candidates. The teams came up with independent conclusions and both will be issuing reports to us. When they are received, these reports will be available to all members.

After an active fall term, I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful holiday season. In thinking about the last six months, it seems to me that the single biggest event for SFCP was the final sale of Sutter Street and our purchase of 444 Natoma. This is a generational event, enabling us to give to future analysts that which we enjoyed at Sutter Street: a home for our future, and a Center where psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic thinking can thrive. However, the purchase of our new home was not the only event in 2011. Sadly, after 11 years providing services to children through a grant administered by the City of San Francisco, we lost our grant for SFCP's Early Childhood Mental Health Program and closed our program. We had our APsaA site visit by COI with a co-occurring initial site visit by ACPE, Inc. Our Visiting Professor Week with Michael Feldman was exciting and productive. The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program was launched with great success. Our new Faculty co-chairs held their first faculty meeting, which was available to remote viewers. Israel Katz became the first SFCP candidate to participate in IPSO's Visiting Candidate program. Israel visited the Asociación Psicoanalítica Argentina (APA) in Buenos Aires. In addition to attending classes, he presented a paper entitled Desafío en tiempo líquido, and was hosted by local candidates. As we move into 2012, SFCP will receive our first IPSO visiting candidate, Ursula Worsch, a 4th year candidate from Giessen, Germany. Ursula will be attending classes, receiving supervision, and will be hosted by our candidates. We will have a Capital Campaign to benefit our new building and endow it for the future. And, if the build out goes smoothly, we will move into our new building in June 2012.

In a recent Youtube interview, Horacio Etchegoyen described some of his accomplishments during his term as President of the IPA (1993-97). In this interview, conducted by Peruvian analyst Adela Escardó, he states that prior to his presidency, IPA Council meetings and minutes were secret. Etchegoyen observes "When I was vice president, there were some vice presidents who had access to the minutes because they had been there [at the meeting] but there were others who didn't have access". Feeling this was a paradox, he "radically eliminated the secrecy of the minutes". He continues by stating that another of his achievements was making the IPA Council the actual ruling body of the IPA. Until his Presidency, the Trust, a continuation of the committee founded by Ferenczi, Rank, Sachs, Jones, Abraham and Freud had more power in the IPA than the President or Council.
