Starting next month, the Newsletter will include a Letters column. We hope it will create a forum where people can share reactions to articles, or write about their concerns in an informal way. Please make submissions to Marcia Parham at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by the 15th of the month.

Editor's Note

Hello, All—

I am honored to be taking over as editor of the Newsletter. I have been an active writer of fiction, poetry, and academic work for the last forty years or so, and I like to say that I learned to edit at my mother's knees. She was an overconscientious high school English teacher who would regale me with the finer points of composition while writing copious comments on her students' papers.

This newsletter was delayed due to issues related to the changes in the website. Discussions are underway about the future of the newsletter given the new capabilities of the website and the increased use of email for announcements and communications.

This is my last issue as editor of the newsletter as the one-year experiment I committed to comes to an end. I have very much enjoyed my interactions with the many members of our community who supply the energy to keep SFCP alive. I have been particularly impressed with the candidates. They communicate regularly via the internet and I have benefited from their efforts and enthusiasms. My newsletter committee has kept me sane so special thanks go to Bronwen Lemmon and Mary McMillan. The axis mundi of whatever stability we have, our dedicated and creative staff, is vital.

In July I suggested that we compile an extra summer newsletter consisting primarily of an annual report. This August "newsletter" would permit members to learn more about both what had happened during the year and also plans for the coming year in the many divisions and corners of the Center. This endeavor turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected, in part because it is a new endeavor and in part due to vacation schedules and staff changes. This newsletter includes that annual report which in future years will grow in size and become part of the basic information cycle at the Center. At the same time the launching of the much-needed and very exciting new website has sent us back to the drawing board in terms of the newsletter and taken this month's newsletter out of my hands. Some of the items once found in the newsletter have been moved to other sections of the website and the new site design does not yet include a clear user-friendly structure for the newsletter. The newsletter committee and the staff, aided by input from the Management Team, will be meeting this month in order to map out a specific plan that will be in place by the next newsletter.
