News from the Child Development Program and the Preschool Consultation Project

by Katya Woodmansee, Ph.D. and Rebecca Schwartz, Ph.D.

During the Spring of 2012, the Child Development Program and the Preschool Consultation Project hosted two presentations. On Saturday, March 3rd, Elissa Meryl, Psy.D. and Patricia Ardziejewski conducted a workshop entitled "Slow Down: Children at Play." Patricia, the director of Morning Glory Nursery and Elissa, a member of the Preschool Consultation Project and a clinical psychologist, have collaborated in creating a group for incoming parents to help them slow down so they can be present with their own and their children's experiences while transitioning to preschool. The workshop presented their collaborative work and explored future possibilities of such collaborations. Patricia and two of the teachers set the tone of slowing down by starting the workshop with a captivating puppet show, something that they do routinely with the children. The presentation was very well received by the audience of early childhood educators and mental health care professionals.

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM the Psychoanalytic Education Division:
Important Policy Change, Curriculum Schedule Change, and PED Positions Open
Please Read!

by Mary Margaret McClure, D.M.H., Chair PED

We have been busy as always in the Psychoanalytic Education Division. We have lots of good news, and there are also three important changes to let you know about. In a sense the good news is woven throughout the changes, as we are successfully developing a more orderly and open way of functioning as a Division in a vital working relationship with the rest of the Center. This is in the spirit of the "new" organizational structure, but it has taken us a full five years of effort to get to this point.

PED Positions Filled
Thanks to all who have volunteered their participation and leadership in the PED in response to our announcement last month of open positions. I am very pleased to announce that two positions have been filled. The position of Outreach for Psychoanalytic Education will be filled by an excellent team of Gary Grossman, Shela Fisk, and Margot Beattie. This is a big job and the shared talents, contacts and creativity of the three, each from a different regional area of SFCP and each with an eye to the whole, will be a real breath of fresh air in this important aspect of the PED and coordinating with SFCP Outreach as well. The position of Curriculum Committee Chair will be filled by Laurie Case who is exceptionally well qualified for this job because of her long work with the current and past Curriculum Committees, her chairing of the Theory Track, and her interest in the teaching of psychoanalysis. Others have volunteered their interest in this position, and we are grateful to have them working with us on various aspects of psychoanalytic education though not in this position. The position of the Chair of the PED has not yet been filled, but the Task Force appointed to find a new Chair has not completed its work, and a new Task Force has been appointed by Robin Deutsch to consider reconfiguring the position in hopes that that will make for an easier succession of leadership.

by Laura Dansky, Ph.D. and Jan Messer, M.F.T.

In the fall of 2009, Elizabeth Simpson, LCSW, and Meryl Botkin, PhD, had an inspiration to spearhead a group of SFCP graduates, including Marilynne Kanter, PhD, Patricia Marra, MFT, Dena Sorbo, LCSW, and Julie Stahl, MD, in an outreach effort to enhance connections among seasoned psychoanalytic clinicians. The hope was to provide an opportunity for psychotherapists with 20+ years of experience to build a community and share ideas, knowledge and interests cultivated during their many years in practice.
