Title: How Understanding and Incorporating Contemporary Psychoanalytic Ideas Can Greatly Enhance Your Therapeutic Effectiveness
Date: Thursday, February 2, 9, 16, 23, 2012
Time: 06:30pm - 08:00pm
Instructor: Celeste Birkhofer, Ph.D., M.F.T.
Location: Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Building, Room 3200 (third floor)
401 Quarry Road
Stanford, CA 94304

Course Description:
What do we actually do that helps facilitate change, helps our patients navigate through their pain and improve the quality of their lives? What is research saying about the effectiveness of therapy? The evidence shows that no one "brand" of therapy is superior to another, but there are some important common variables to good outcome, many of them oriented around psychoanalytic principles. We will discuss the research, compare psychoanalytic and CBT approaches, and expand on such analytic topics as mentalizing, implicit memory, and the importance of the therapeutic relationship.

Instructor:
Celeste Birkhofer, Ph.D., M.F.T.
, Graduate of the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program; Candidate, Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis ; Private Practice, Menlo Park.
