Press release for the 2011Haskell F. Norman Prize for Psychoanalytic Excellence

The Haskell Norman Prize for Excellence in Psychoanalysis for 2011 to be awarded to Robert Stolorow, Ph.D. of Los Angeles, CA.

The Haskell Norman Prize Committee awards analysts who have made major contributions to psychoanalytic theory, clinical achievement, psychoanalytic education or applied psychoanalysis. This year a $5,000 prize and certificate acknowledging the occasion will be awarded to Robert Stolorow, Ph.D. for his many achievements in all of these fields. At the October 2011 scientific meeting of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis which commemorates the Haskell F. Norman Prize, Dr. Stolorow will present an original paper and receive the award.

Dr. Stolorow is a founding member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles; founding faculty member of the Institute of the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, NYC; and a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine. He is the author of numerous books, among them, Trauma and Human Existence; Structures of Subjectivity: Explorations in Psychoanalytic Phenomenology; World, Affectivity, Trauma: Heidegger and Post-Cartesian Psychoanalysis; Contexts of Being: The Intersubjective Foundations of Psychological Life; as well as many papers on psychoanalysis.

During his lifetime, Haskell Norman made contributions to the San Francisco psychoanalytic Institute and Society, including our building, library and Extension Division. He appreciated the independence of thought that led to scientific breakthroughs. He was a scholar and had an internationally known collection of first editions and presentation copies of the works of the men and women who contributed to the advance of scientific knowledge from Vesalius to Freud. I feel sure Haskell would have been happy with this year's choice of award recipient being Robert Stolorow.

Past recipients of the Haskell F. Norman Prize for Excellence in Psychoanalysis have been Joseph Weiss, M.D.; Charles Brenner, M.D.; Calvin Settlage, M.D.; Haydee Faimberg, M.D.; Bennett Simon, M.D. and Roberta Apfel, M.D.; Leo Rangell, M.D.; and Thomas Ogden, M.D.
