Candidates’ Association
Upon acceptance for training, all candidates are eligible for membership in the Candidates’ Association.
Special meetings are held throughout the year that focus on issues of interest to the candidates or clinical presentations to visiting speakers and faculty.
In addition, the Candidates’ Organization serves as a link with candidates from other institutes and with the Candidates’ Associations of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
One of the main functions of the Candidates’ Association is to provide an organized channel for feedback from the candidate group to the faculty as well as from the faculty to the candidates.
Candidates’ Colloquia
During the year, senior analysts are invited to meet with candidates to discuss on-going analytic cases.
6-8 colloquia will be scheduled throughout the year; topics and times to be announced.
Child Colloquia
Three to six special events are arranged yearly with local and visiting child analysts to present clinical and theoretical material related to child analysts.
These colloquia are open to all candidates, post graduates and others in the mental health community (by invitation).
These are usually on Saturday mornings.
CHILD COLLOQUIUM
The Challenges of Treating Developmental Trauma Disorder in a Residential Agency for Youth
Presenter: Ed Levin, M.D.
Saturday, April 18, 2009
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
SFCP Auditorium, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Floor (entrance on Webster St.)
Children in residential facilities are often misdiagnosed and treated with high doses of multiple medications. The more accurate diagnosis for many of these children, Developmental Trauma Disorder, reconceptualizes the treatment approach and leads to substantial clinical benefit. Dr. Levin will describe the clinical case of a young girl in residential treatment to illustrate how reconsidering mood and conduct disorders as manifestations of past trauma can lead to a vastly different way of helping severely disturbed children and adolescents.
Dr. Levin is a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist in private practice in Berkeley, CA.
He is Chair, Department of Psychiatry CME Committee, Alta Bates Medical Center and Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Northern California Organization of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is a consultant to the Lincoln Child Center in Oakland, CA and the R&R Educational Group Home in Richmond, CA.
CE credits are NOT available.
