FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY (Jan - April 2008)
Samuel Chase, M.D., Elizabeth Simpson, L.C.S.W., Co-Chairs

This course is intended for clinicians working in a variety of clinical settings (including private practice, hospital settings, case management, etc.) whose work will be deepened by familiarity with the application of psychoanalytic concepts. The course will sharpen clinical skills and aid in translating theoretical ideas into actions helpful to patients. Each week, concepts discussed in the Clinical Theory Track (three separate seminars) are explored further in the Clinical Case Conference.

Seminar on Beginning Treatment

This seminar will consider how we try to understand our patients in the initial sessions. We will explore data used in making hypotheses about a patient’s difficulties, with attention given to transference and counter-transference. We will discuss how and when we talk with patients about the nature of their difficulties and the goals of treatment.

Jonathan Dunn, Ph.D. ,Member, Faculty, Training & Supervising Analyst, SFPI&S.
Wednesdays, January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 2008.

SFPI&S, 2420 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA; 12 noon - 1:15 p.m.

Seminar on Conducting Treatment

This seminar covers aspects of technique in psychoanalytic psychotherapy that become important as treatment unfolds. We will consider the activity of both patient and therapist, and how we observe and understand the impact of interventions. We will discuss transference, resistance, unconscious fantasy, and working through, as well as counter-transference reactions and enactments .

J. Samuel Chase, M.D. , Member, Faculty, Training & Supervising Analyst, SFPI&S.
Wednesdays, February 13, 20, 27, March 5, 12, 19, 2008.

SFPI&S, 2420 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA; 12 noon - 1:15 p.m.

Seminar on Conceptualizing Treatment

We will consider the nature of therapeutic action: How do we conceptualize psychotherapy and how does this inform our ideas about how people change during the course of treatment? Using clinical writings representing several theoretical orientations, we will focus on the influence of theory on our technique. Clinical vignettes will facilitate our examination of how technique shifts, depending upon our formulation of the patient, and the patient - therapist dyad.
