RE: Required procedures for granting of continuing education
credit for mental health professionals attending SFPI&S programs
This memo outlines the procedure developed by the SFPI&S Continuing
Education Committee for the granting of continuing education credits.
These procedures have been developed in order to comply with the requirements
and expectations of the various professional organizations that accredit
us as a provider of continuing education credit. It is essential that
these procedures be followed so that we can continue to receive accreditation
status from these various organizations and so that our members, candidates,
and community participants will have the appropriate documentation to
meet CE requirements for licensure.
1) The organizer of any program that would like to be eligible for
CE credit must submit a Program Request Form to the Extension Division
Office well in advance of the proposed date of the program and well
in advance of the distribution of material advertising that program
participation will earn CE credit. The Program Request Form is available
from the Extension Division Office/CE Coordinator (Room 7).
2) It is very important that succinct and specific written objectives
be developed for each program. The written objectives must appear on:
a) the Program Request Form, b) the brochure and/or announcement of
the program.
Publicity Announcements (brochures, flyers, etc.)
The objectives have to be written not as goals but as follows:
i) Learning objectives in terms of behavior closely linked to clinical activities.
ii) Learning objectives that are specific and action oriented.
See the following two examples:
a) The Coming Changes in Psychoanalytic Education: A Set of Proposals
- This presentation will familiarize the participants with major critiques of psychoanalytic education.
- A set of proposals for change will follow the analysis of major problems in psychoanalytic institutes, and the participants will be able to assess their pros and cons.
- A particular focus will be the assessment of advantages and problems of the training analysis system.
b) Reconsidering Trauma
- Describe a variety of clinical tools and techniques relevant to trauma survivors.
- List three techniques to increase affect regulation or tolerance.
- Describe the primary characteristics and impacts of mindfulness as relates to trauma therapy.
- Outline the primary components of “hot spot” processing.
- Discuss the role of psychopharmacology in trauma treatment.
- Discuss therapist “counter-activation” and its influence on therapeutic disparity.
Additional guidelines to be utilized in the development
of appropriately stated course objectives can be provided to you in
the form of photocopies of the guiding information provided by the accrediting
professional organizations. To request these photocopies, contact the
Extension Division Office/CE Coordinator at (415)-563-5815.
3) Any brochure or announcement of a continuing education program must
use the specific logo and/or wording about the awarding of CE credit
required by the various professional organizations accrediting our organization.
Please consult the Extension Division Office/CE Coordinator for the
appropriate language for all brochures and announcements. See also enclosed
sample program request forms.
4) Attendance forms must be provided at each program and are given
to program developers prior to programs that have been approved. The
attendance forms must be returned to the Extension Division Office/CE
Coordinator no later that one week following the event to be kept on
file.
5) There must be an evaluation instrument and procedure for each program
(also provided by the Extension Division Office/CE Coordinator). The
participant evaluation forms must be returned to the Extension Division
Office/CE Coordinator no later than one week following the event to
be kept on file.
6) A written summary of the evaluations must be submitted to the Extension
Division Office/CE Coordinator for review upon request by the CME committee
(example form available).
7) Program disclosure and confirmation forms must be completed
in advance of each event to which they apply.
In the development of these procedures, the CE Committee has tried
to keep in mind the generosity of our members and candidates in volunteering
so much time to the organizing of all the valuable educational programs
offered by the SFPI&S. At the same time, we have had to keep in
mind the importance of complying with the requirements of the professional
organizations that accredit us. In the milieu of increased regulation
of professionals it is more important than ever not to jeopardize our
well deserved and hard earned status as an organization accredited to
provide continuing education credit.
Thanks for your assistance in implementing these procedures.
