DAY-LONG PROGRAMS

The Extension Division of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis is pleased to present:

A DAY WITH DAVID TUCKETT
Saturday, November 14, 2009
9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco

David Tuckett’s substantial contributions to psychoanalysis are grounded in essential and fundamental ideas about how analysts think and work and about how they talk with each other. In his writing, he seeks to clarify the common underlying theoretical concepts that inform clinical work and apply them in the consulting room, as well as in psychoanalytic education and psychoanalytic papers. He advocates for a “disciplined psychoanalytic pluralism” in which various theories and models are embraced in the context of a shared understanding of the core tenets of psychoanalytic work.

“How do we know when what is happening between two people should be called psychoanalysis?” In encouraging psychoanalysis to think about such important questions, Professor Tuckett has promoted dialogue between psychoanalysts of different traditions and cultures. He has been instrumental in developing the Working Groups on Comparative Clinical Methods. In these groups, psychoanalysts gather to present and discuss clinical material with the aim of both understanding and comparing how different analysts work. Group discussions are meant to move away from supervisory comments, (that is, what should have been done), towards an understanding of the explanatory and implicit models that a particular analyst is using, that is, what is actually being done. Drawing upon his background in sociology, he has applied the idea of the explanatory model to psychoanalytic listening and practice. Clinicians use implicit theories that are knowable, can be articulated and at the same time, are taken for granted; these theories are part of our every day work.

In thinking deeply about the foundations of psychoanalytic work, Professor Tuckett never loses sight of the subjective, unconscious and affective aspects that are a thread through the meeting between analyst and patient and between analysts with each other as they present and discuss material. In his paper, “Does anything go?,” he describes psychoanalysis as “ … a human profession based in the real experience of inner conflictual psychic life, and so on human strengths and weaknesses and the reality and unpredictability of unconscious contact between persons…” He draws upon these rich stores of lived analytic practice, building from the ground up, to shape our thinking about theory and technique.

David Tuckett, MA, MSc, is the author of numerous books and papers in both medical sociology and psychoanalysis. Most recently, he has co-authored a book entitled: Psychoanalysis Comparable and Incomparable. The Evolution of a Method to Describe and Compare Psychoanalytic Approaches. He served as editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis from 1993-2001. In 2007, he won the Sigourney Award for Psychoanalysis for his contributions to psychoanalysis. Professor Tuckett is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the British Psychoanalytic Society.

We will begin the day with the presentation of David Tuckett’s paper, “Theory in Action: Implicit Models in Analytic Practice.” In his presentation, Tuckett will discuss the “everyday theory” used in psychoanalytic work through clinical vignettes and illustration of the analyst’s way of working. Dr.Victor Bonfilio will have a conversation with David Tuckett about his paper and his ideas, and the audience will join in this discussion. Dr. Abby Wolfson will present the case of an adult in psychoanalysis.

This program continues the focus of previous programs with Antonino Ferro, Danielle and Jean-Michel Quinodoz, Anne Alvarez, Ken Corbett, Michael Parsons, Ron Britton, Dale Boesky, Adam Phillips, John Steiner, Roy Schafer, Betty Joseph, and Hanna Segal, which have all offered richly illustrative clinical material of ongoing psychoanalytic treatments.
