Community Members' Professional Development Salon Series

Medication Management Challenges for both Psychiatrists and Psychotherapists in Psychoanalytic Practices

DATE: Tuesday, MARCH 2, 2010

PANEL:
Adam Goldyne, MD
, Candidate SFCP and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, UCSF
Edit Markoczy, PsyD, Candidate, SFCP
Mary Susan Hansen, MD, Member & Faculty, SFCP and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, UCSF
Mark Swoiskin, MD, Members & Faculty, SFCP

Moderator: Renée Spencer, MFT, Candidate, SFCP and Assistant Clinical Professor of Pharmacy, UCSF

In this salon we'll have an informal discussion about issues related to medication management from the vantage points of both psychiatrist and non-psychiatrist clinicians who are working psychoanalytically. Some of the topics that our panel will take up include:

  1. What are the differences between a more symptom-focused assessment such as a medication management visit compared to a psychotherapy session from the vantage points of both psychiatrists and psychotherapists? Can symptom-focused assessments be conceptualized and included within a psychoanalytic framework?

  2. Many psychiatrists experience a split between the medication management community and the psychotherapy community. This division evokes concerns for some psychiatrists about disclosing aspects of their practice to therapist colleagues. Is there a similar concern for psychotherapists who provide more symptom-focused assessments?

  3. What are the benefits of split treatment? What are the disadvantages?

  4. What are some of the common transference and countertransference issues that arise around medication use and split treatment?

  5. How can therapists and psychiatrists communicate more effectively with each other and what are the issues that get in the way?
