The Vicissitudes of the Mother Daughter Relationship
Ruth Fischer is the 2007 recipient of the American Psychoanalytic Association National Psychoanalytic Woman Scholar Award. Dr. Fischer is a training and supervising analyst for adults, children and adolescents at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia as well as Co-Chair of the Center Child Division. Her other positions include geographic supervising analyst at the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Institute and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr Fischer has been active in the American Psychoanalytic Association in issues related to children and women. She was co-editor of two volumes on Mothers and Daughters in Psychoanalytic Inquiry in 2004 and 2006.
Dr. Fischer will discuss her paper on the complex relationship between mothers and daughters. As she revisits earlier psychoanalytic ideas of femininity, female gender identity, and the Oedipal complex, she will describe important theoretical revisions, such as primary femininity and female genital anxieties. She will present a richer understanding of the bond between mother and daughter, arguing that girls do not sever or turn away from the relationship with their mothers, but rework, revisit and integrate this relationship over the course of life. Dr. Fischer understanding of female psychology as a struggle around relatedness and autonomy holds the mother daughter relationship as central. Film clips will illustrate her thought provoking ideas on female relatedness and development.
Moderator: Mary Ewert D.M.H.
