Greetings from the Community Education & Service Division Chair - Gary Grossman, Ph.D.
SFCP’s programming is not limited to candidates in psychoanalytic training.
The Center is committed to providing a variety of educational opportunities to the San Francisco Bay Area. Our Extension Division offers workshops, seminars, courses and conferences for mental health professionals and students, as well as programs on art and culture for a general audience. The Student Outreach Program provides free seminars on a variety of psychoanalytic topics throughout the academic year. Our Public Information Program sponsors lectures and workshops addressing contemporary cultural, political and social issues and has a Speakers Bureau available to journalists and community organizations.
The Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program, our newest educational offering, inaugurates its first 2 year class in September 2007. This comprehensive program is designed for experienced clinicians who are interested in expanding their skills in psychoanalytically-oriented therapy.
In order to facilitate access to The Center’s psychoanalytic educators and consultants, our Outreach Liaison Service provides community organizations and institutions with teachers, supervisors and consultants on an ongoing basis.
The Center’s Fellowship Program provides mentoring to graduate students and recent graduates with strong leadership potential who have a particular interest in clinical and/or applied psychoanalysis. This program is open to students and graduates from all disciplines.
Of particular interest to general audiences have been our Arts & Culture Programs. Inaugurated in 2005, Theatre on the Couch, a collaboration between the American Conservatory Theatre and SFCP, provides psychoanalytic scholars who facilitate lively discussions with audiences following a play. This year we launched Let’s talk Opera, Doc in conjunction with the San Francisco Opera.
In addition to bringing psychoanalytic education to the community, the Center is also committed to providing psychoanalytically-informed services to individuals, families, organizations and schools. Of particular interest to parents and educators is SFCP’s Child Development Program, which offers on-site preschool consultations, early childhood mental health consultations, and workshops for early childhood educations. In addition, the CDP offers year-long seminars for child therapists. The SFCP Low-Fee Clinic offers consultation and referral for individuals seeking psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy.
