San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis to Bestow First Haskell F. Norman Prize for Psychoanalytic Excellence

San Francisco, CA, June 2, 1998 - The San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis is proud to announce that the inaugural Haskell F. Norman Prize for Psychoanalytic Excellence will be awarded at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute's graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 6, 1998. The Haskell Norman Family Foundation awarded $100,000 as an endowment for the Prize to the San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis in early May.

Haskell F. Norman was a San Francisco psychiatrist and training and supervising psychoanalyst at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. A Marin County resident, Norman died in December 19%. Dr. Norman, a noted bibliophile, created a private library of rare scientific and medical first editions, including a collection of first-edition works by Sigmund Freud.

The first award will be given to Dr. Joseph Weiss, a Bay Area psychoanalyst who has achieved international recognition for his research and theory about the psychoanalytic process. Psychoanalysts are experienced mental health professionals, already possessing advanced degrees (MD's, PhD's, MSW's), who have undergone eight or more years of psychoanalytic training.

"This endowment is of great significance to the Foundation because it endorses our mission of highlighting psychoanalysis and gaining recognition for psychoanalytic endeavors," said Mark I. Levy, MD, president of the San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis.

Every two years, a panel of five local and international psychoanalysts will accept nominations and determine the Prize winner. The recipient will deliver a scientific address related to his/her work at the awards ceremony.

The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society was founded over 50 years ago. A nonprofit organization, it has a membership of over 200 practicing analysts and more than 80 candidates (psychoanalysts in training). The institute provides training, offers classes and seminars to professionals and the general public, and provides community services.
