A.C.T. Audience Members Become Armchair Analysts
Theater on the Couch Creates a Popular Post-Theater Phenomenon in San Francisco
San Francisco, CA – September 7, 2006 – Fans of the theater often engage in post-mortems of the plays they’ve just seen on their way to the parking garage or over dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Only in San Francisco can audience members participate in Theater on the Couch, a free and exciting dialogue between a panel of local psychoanalysts and the audience.
This dynamic collaboration between the American Conservatory Theater and the San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis (SFFP) will debut for the 2006-07 season after the September 29th performance of Travesties at the A.C.T.
"Theater on the Couch is one of our most popular post performance events," says Randy Taradash, A.C.T.’s audience development manager.
"We’ve had an average of 150 audience members stay for each presentation and the dialogues become more engaging every time."
Theater on the Couch is presented free of charge as a community offering from SFFP to patrons who attend the A.C.T. productions.
To help the audience sort through Tom Stoppard’s play, SFFP and A.C.T. will present Theater on the Couch following the Travesties performance on Friday, September 29, 2006.
Rich in psychological flights of fancy, Travesties throws three 20th century geniuses (James Joyce, Vladimir Lenin and Tristan Tzara) together in the same room.
Dr. Linda Lagemann and Dr. Wendy Stern will launch the dialogue for the Travesties production.
"Theater on the Couch is entering its third season of providing a stimulating dimension to the theater experience," said Dr. Lagemann, founding director and host of Theater on the Couch.
"Audience members have interesting observations and questions and, of course, it’s fun to share our passion for psychoanalytic ideas and their application to theater and everyday life."
Theater on the Couch includes four more presentations during A.C.T.’s season, including The Little Foxes on November 3, 2006;
Hedda Gabler on February 16, 2007; the world premiere of After the War on March 30, 2007; and Blackbird on May 4, 2007.
For more information on tickets or psychoanalytic discussions, please call Jeff Miller, SFFP Development Director, at 415-563-3366 or sffp@sfpis.org.
The San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis works with the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute & Society and other charitable organizations to provide mental health services to the people of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Psychoanalysts are experienced mental health professionals, already possessing advanced degrees (MD’s, PhD’s or MSW’s), who have undergone at least eight years of psychoanalytic training.
