And the (Poetry) Beat Goes On…
Poetry and Psychoanalysis Program Offers One More Event for Poetry Lovers
At the End of the San Francisco International Poetry Festival

San Francisco, CA – July 9, 2007 – Poetry lovers who don’t want the celebration of the San Francisco International Poetry Festival to end can continue the festivities with a local poetry reading and discussion. Poetry and Psychoanalysis is a unique program that invites members of the public to sit in on conversations between distinguished poets and psychoanalysts who happen to be poets. Former Berkeley resident and acclaimed poet Elizabeth Robinson will share thoughts about her creative process with analyst Alice Jones, M.D., on Sunday, July 29th, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.

Poetry and psychoanalysis have in common a deep engagement with language, yet poets and psychoanalysts seldom enter into conversation about this shared engagement. During the program, the featured poet also reads selected pieces and answers questions from audience members.

"Poetry and Psychoanalysis offers a rare opportunity for poets and analysts to talk about how poetry gets written," said the program’s founder, Susan Kolodny, D.M.H. "We are interested in fostering an exchange between poets and psychoanalysts about their mutual interests in language and creativity."

Free and open to the public, the Poetry and Psychoanalysis program offers insight to artists, literary journal editors, local students in Master’s of Fine Arts degree programs, and anyone interested in the creative arts. Begun in 2006 with a conversation with poet Brenda Hillman, the July 29th program featuring Elizabeth Robinson is the sixth in the series. Elizabeth Robinson is the author of numerous books of poetry, including Pure Descent, winner of the National Poetry Series in 2002, and Apprehend, winner of the Fence Modern Poets Series. She co-edits 26, a magazine of poetry and poetics, and the EtherDome Chapbook series.

Poetry and Psychoanalysis will be held at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis Library, 2420 Sutter Street (near Divisadero) in San Francisco. Interested parties are asked to RSVP by phone at 415-563-5815 or via email to office@sf-cp.org.

The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis was founded in 1941. This nonprofit organization boasts a membership of more than 160 practicing analysts and more than 45 candidates (psychoanalysts in training). For more information, visit: www.sf-cp.org.
