Community Involvement Distinguishes the New San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis

San Francisco, CA – July 9, 2007 – Which Bay Area organization collaborates with preschool teachers in Hunters Point, thespians at the American Conservatory Theater, and clinicians from the Stanford University community? The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, whose structural reorganization and name change were made official this month, provides education and community service programs without parallel in its profession. Originally a training institute and membership organization for local psychoanalysts, the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) has greatly expanded its mission to reach Bay Area residents from Sonoma to the South Bay. SFCP offers extended education programs for mental health professionals, a broad variety of arts and academic programs for the general public, access to the largest collection of psychoanalytic publications in the Western United States, and selected service efforts such as an acclaimed Child Development Program. (A complete list of SFCP’s programs is included in the fact sheet below.)

"The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis is a true leader in outreach among all the institutes in the United States," says K. Lynne Moritz, M.D., president of the American Psychoanalytic Association. "With the Bay Area’s large healthcare market, San Francisco leverages this local demand and interest in mental health issues by serving as a unique resource for psychoanalytically-oriented education, arts and community service programs."

By combining its academic and outreach endeavors under a new umbrella organization, the SFCP has reorganized its Board and administrative structures to reflect the growing interest by its more than 200 members to continue a dynamic relationship with the surrounding community. Another aspect of SFCP’s renewal is the planned construction of a new headquarters that will house an expanded library, five classrooms, and meeting space to accommodate up to 125 people.

"We are continuing and increasing our commitment to offering a variety of programs to mental health professionals and the public," says William Glover, Ph.D., SFCP president. "Each day, the Center provides hands-on training, relevant seminars, and outreach activities that bring to life our mission of advancing the vitality and enduring value of psychoanalysis in Northern California."

History

The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) was founded in 1941, organized as the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Society, and followed by addition of the Institute in 1942. The Institute & Society merged in 1961 and was recognized for its long tradition of training psychoanalysts in the Bay Area. The San Francisco Foundation for Psychoanalysis was established in 1994 as an outreach organization, providing financial support and publicity for community projects.

The SFCP represents a merger of the Institute & Society and the Foundation as a single not-for-profit organization that supports the continuing education and outreach efforts of more than 160 practicing analysts and more than 45 candidates (psychoanalysts in training). Psychoanalysts are experienced mental health professionals, already possessing advanced degrees (MD’s, PhD’s or MSW’s), who have undergone intensive psychoanalytic training. What is Psychoanalysis?
Analysis is an intimate partnership, in the course of which the patient becomes aware of the underlying (unconscious) sources of his or her difficulties not simply intellectually, but emotionally - by re-experiencing them with the analyst. Patient and analyst join in efforts not only to modify crippling life patterns and remove incapacitating symptoms, but also to expand the patient’s freedom to work and to love.
