Mourns the Death of Adrienne Applegarth, M.D.

San Francisco, Calif. - July 26, 2003 - Respected psychoanalyst Adrienne Applegarth, M.D. of Byron, Calif., died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Applegarth served as Chair of the Education Committee and as a Training Analyst for the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute & Society (SFPI&S). Among her many professional distinctions, she was Dean of Students, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and a member of the Physiology Department at the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center.

Dr. Applegarth was a graduate of Lowell High School in San Francisco. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California-Berkeley and earned her M.D. from Harvard University Medical School in 1950. She then returned to UC Berkeley to earn a Ph.D. in physiology. Dr. Applegarth was an invited member of the prestigious Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Princeton University and her research efforts focused on female psychology. The American Psychoanaltyic Association and SFPI&S called upon Dr. Applegarth on numerous occassions for presentations and research papers, including her Psychoanalytic Inquiry article entitled, “Origins of Feminity and the Wish for a Child.”

Dr. Applegarth enjoyed numerous athletic and intellectual pursuits in her free time. At Lowell High School, she was a champion swimmer. As an adult, she was a member of the International Aerobatic Club, trained and rode Arabian horses, sailed, skiied, climbed mountains and enjoyed fly fishing. Dr. Applegarth was also a violinist and played chamber music.

Dr. Applegarth was born in San Francisco on May 2, 1926 to the distinguished architect George A. Applegarth and his wife, Gwedolyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud Todd, and siblings Allan Applegarth and Laura Cresap. She is survived by her brother Jerrold Applegarth, M.D. and 15 nieces and nephews. She will be buried in Antioch.
