An Evening of Art with the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society -
Wine and Cheese Event Open to the Public

San Francisco, CA - June 4, 2004 - Art enthusiasts are invited to attend the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society's benefit event, "An Evening of Art," on Thursday, June 24, 2004 from 6-9 p.m. Works of art, including wood sculpture, photography, oil/acrylic painting, water colors and ceramics, created by more than 20 friends and members of SFPI&S will be displayed at the organization's office and library at 2420 Sutter Street in San Francisco. All proceeds from the artists' participation fees during this free event will benefit the new SFPI&S library, to begin construction in 2005.

"Working as an analyst and therapist can be isolative, but this art exhibit is giving our members and friends an opportunity to gather and talk about psychoanalysis without words," says Jane Dulay, M.D., a member of SFPI&S and co-chair of the event. "Art can be thought of as a form applied psychoanalysis, demonstrating how the unconscious becomes conscious through other senses that evoke meaning and feeling in the artist and the viewer. We are pleased to share our work with the public."

"An Evening of Art" is being held in conjunction with the American Psychoanalytic Association's 93rd Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Wine and appetizers will be served throughout the event on June 24th and while there is no admission fee, donations will be accepted. The art exhibit will remain on display through Friday, June 25, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the SFPI&S offices, but no refreshments will be served during the day. For more information, call 415-563-5815. A list of artists is attached.

The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society (SFPI&S) was founded over 60 years ago. This nonprofit organization boasts a membership of over 160 practicing analysts and more than 45 candidates (psychoanalysts in training). Psychoanalysts are experienced mental health professionals, already possessing advanced degrees (MD's, PhD's or MSW's), who have undergone at least eight years of psychoanalytic training.
