FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FreudFest Fêtes Sigmund Freud’s 150th Birthday
Local Psychoanalysts Offer Insight into the "Talking Cure"
San Francisco, CA – May 2, 2006 – Sex, religion and psychoanalysis:
All are volatile topics that will be placed on the couch during FreudFest, the commemoration of Sigmund Freud’s 150th birthday at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco (JCCSF) on Sunday, May 21st beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Psychoanalysts including Nancy J. Chodorow, Ph.D., who was featured in Newsweek magazine’s recent cover story on Freud’s legacy, will offer intriguing and stimulating presentations to the public.
FreudFest offers the following lectures on psychoanalysis, also known as the "Talking Cure."
- "Sex, Gender and Freud" by Dr. Chodorow explores why after decades of critique, Freud’s radical, unique insights about sexuality and gender remain surprisingly relevant today.
- "A Century of Psychoanalysis: What’s Out? What’s In? What’s New?" by Stephen Seligman, D.M.H. provides a window into the world of psychoanalysis and what psychoanalysts do to actually help people.
- "Judaism on the Couch: Religion in the Modern World" by Professor Naomi Janowitz examines how Freud’s controversial writings about Moses and Jewish practice hold up against the work of current comparative religion scholars.
- "Why Choose to Become a Psychoanalyst 100 Years after Freud? One Psychiatrist’s Journey" by Adam Goldyne, M.D., explores the career path of an aspiring psychoanalyst.
Please note: Dr. Goldyne’s presentation will be held at JCCSF on Sunday, May 7, from 2-5 p.m.
Drs. Chodorow, Seligman, and Ruskin and Professor Janowitz are all members of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute & Society (SPFI&S).
Dr. Goldyne is a candidate of SFPI&S.
Additionally, SFPI&S has joined with the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California to present "Dialogues on Psychoanalysis & Literature," a three-month long program of book groups free and open to the public.
This adjunct program of FreudFest will explore popular novels such as Envy and The Kiss, written by Kathryn Harrison.
