San Francisco, CA - February 23, 2008 - San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis member Gilbert Kliman M.D. spoke to what may have been his largest live television audience on matters derived from psychoanalytic experience. Live for 18 minutes on Communist China TV, Kliman spoke with simultaneous translation at the request of Chinese mental health volunteers he is supervising in Sichuan, China, where they are treating earthquake survivors and refugees. Through collaboration with China America Psychoanalytic Alliance, Mercy Corps, and the Children's Psychological Health Center, Inc., a group of San Francisco analysts including Harriet Wolfe and Gilbert Kliman have created a Mandarin language guided activity book called "My Sichuan Earthquake Experience". It has been culturally and linguistically vetted with the help of Elise Snyder, M.D. and over ten other Chinese and American psychotherapists and psychoanalysts. Mercy Corps has trained over 200 caregivers in the use of the guided activity workbook and distributed more than 35,000 copies in the wake of the May 12, 2008 earthquake. Training and continuing supervision of Sichuan workers is now ongoing through San Francisco's Children's Psychological Health Center, via SKYPE. More volunteer supervisors for Chinese child and family therapists and more Mandarin speaking translators are sought. They can work from home via SKYPE. The recent CCTV broadcast went throughout Asia and is by some estimates likely to have been seen by a billion viewers.
