- Problems in Coming Home: Veterans and Their Families Affected by the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
We are all deeply aware that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are exacting a heavy toll on the mental health of veterans, active duty personnel, and their families. In the coming months, the American Psychoanalytic Association will launch the "Soldiers and Veterans Initiative." Locally, the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis seeks to provide information to the public on the topics of trauma, loss, and violence that affect service men and women and their family groups. The expertise of our membership puts us in a unique position to provide deep understanding of the mourning and anxiety that accompany military service in active war zones. Probably some of our members are involved with psychotherapy and evaluations in VA, community, and other settings as well as others who are expert from practice experiences and research. That is why we are seeking to develop a core group of SFCP members with expertise on topics of trauma, loss, and violence who are interested in sharing their knowledge with the public as well as possibly teaching mental health service providers.
We invite you to take the first step in making this outreach effort a reality by responding to this email with a brief outline of your experience and willingness to participate. Please respond to Mary C. Lamia, Ph.D. She is Chair of our Public Information Committee and is available to answer your questions regarding this new effort. Dr. Lamia can be reached by phone at 415-457-2839 or via email at drlamia@aol.com.
Sincerely,
Mardi Horowitz, M.D.
President
