In this meeting, we will discuss some of Dr. Slochower's core contributions to psychoanalysis. Dr. Slochower has elaborated upon Winnicott's notion of holding within the context of Relational Psychoanalysis. She described the analyst's provision of an emotionally protective space during particular moments of analytic work whereby he/she must bracket and engage with aspects of his/her own complex emotional experience. We will explore the following ideas from the perspective of Dr. Slochower's work:

  1. What is the nature of illusion in psychoanalysis?
  2. What are the countertransferential resistances to the provision of a state of holding?
  3. When does holding fail and what can be done to correct these disjunctions?
  4. What is the relational critique of holding and how do we consider Slochower's work within the Relational Tradition of psychoanalysis?
  5. What allows an analysis to move from a state of holding and containment toward a more intersubjective mode of relating, one with more room for an active, interpretive investigation of meaning?
