Description
Drawing from classical psychoanalytic and attachment theories, this talk will be a discussion of the normal phenomena of infantile anxieties and identification in character development and their contribution to pathological attitudes and relationships to kin and others. The discussion will explore the normal precursors of prejudice, racism and genocide.

Course Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the adaptive and developmental implications of the normal processes of stranger anxiety and identification with primary caregivers
  2. Participants will be able to apply knowledge in the clinical setting about how these normal developmental processes can become the basis for subsequent pathological forms of experiencing and relating to different groups and individuals.
  3. Participants will be better able to appreciate the ubiquitous nature of prejudice and work with its appearance in the clinical setting.
