The Clinical Management of Aggression in Children and Adults

Aggression, as a distinct drive, can serve and motivate inherently the ego's task to insure mastery and adaptation in life. The instructor will present clinical material to illustrate how the processes of self-regulation, self-reflection, and the capacity to use the analyst/therapist as a new developmental object, can lead to structural changes that modify the expression of anger affect both internally and interpersonally.

Educational objectives:

  1. Participants will gain a theoretical basis for understanding the psychoanalytic perspective on aggression.
  2. Participants will learn to track the emergence of aggression in the clinical hour through the use of clinical vignettes.
  3. Participants will gain an understanding of how analytic interpretation can be used to manage aggressive behavior in the clinical setting.
