Psychodynamic Treatment of Substance Abuse Disorders

This course is designed to give clinicians an overview of the aspects of psychoanalytic thinking, and of traditional addiction treatment, that are most useful in the outpatient treatment of the substance abusing patient. We will address processes relating to patient denial, relapse, and ongoing analytic treatment. We will look at how the theories of substance abuse, and of addiction as self-medication, affect treatment. We will also explore the best way to make use of AA and other support groups.
