This presentation is an exploration of the phenomena of tattoos — the history, the evolution and the significance. We will focus in particular on a discussion of psychological importance of the body ego and skin. Given the frequent negative reaction of mothers to their children getting tattooed, we will also focus on tattoos as a mark of separation from the mother and a statement of affiliation with a new "tribe". Three anecdotal vignettes will be presented of interviews with tattooed "informants."

Sue von Baeyer, Ph.D., is a member and faculty at The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and is a Personal and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. For many years she was Director of Training at The Boyer House Foundation, a residential facility for seriously disturbed individuals. She has no tattoos.

Marilynne Kanter, Ph.D., is a Graduate and Faculty of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, Program Developer of the Conversations Series, Co-Chair of the Membership Integration Committee and Co-Chair of the SFCP Extension Division Day With Program. She is a practicing psychoanalyst in San Francisco and Sonoma.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will learn about the origins and significance of tribal tattoos and how that is reflected in the culture of tattoos today.
